Marijuana and Its Medicinal Properties

Tuesday, March 2, 2010 |

Not to surprise but to inform that Cannabis or Marijuana has been used for medical purposes since time immemorial. Empirical evidence suggests that physicians recommended its use for the relief of many ailments, including Constipation, Gout, Malaria and loss of Appetite, as well as an aid to Childbirth. Dr W O’Shaughnessy reintroduced cannabis into British medicine in 1842, for treating various ailments such as muscle spasms, menstrual cramps, rheumatism, and the convulsions of tetanus, rabies and epilepsy. It was also used to promote uterine contractions in childbirth, and as a sedative to induce sleep.

Cannabis can help in relieving symptoms of illnesses :

HIV-related and cancer-related wasting.

pain unrelieved by usual pain relief treatments.

neurological disorders including (but not confined to) multiple sclerosis, Tourette’s syndrome, and motor neuron disease.

nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, which does not respond to the usual treatments for this problem.

There is a large amount of anecdotal evidence, and some research evidence, about the usefulness of cannabis for these conditions, there is a lack of good controlled evidence. So further research is needed to examine the benefits that cannabis and cannabinoids appear to have for these illnesses.
