Don't Blame It on Your Genes for Poor Health

Friday, June 11, 2010 |

It's a common observation in modern urban population that most people find an easy excuse in blaming it on their genes for poor health. What they deliberately tend to forget is the simple fact that genes, or genetic makeup of a human body is only partly responsible for their health conditions.

Environmental and situational risk factors, though have a significant effect on health condition of an individual, it is the behavioral aspect of a person that is more responsible for his poor health.

The completion of the Human Genome Project (HGP) has led to increased availability of genetic risk information linking gene variants to a number of common health conditions.

Recently, Suzanne O'Neill and her colleagues from the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Maryland, US, conducted a survey to identify the link between family history, behavioral risks and causal attributions for diseases.

Marijuana and Its Medicinal Properties

Tuesday, March 2, 2010 |

Not to surprise but to inform that Cannabis or Marijuana has been used for medical purposes since time immemorial. Empirical evidence suggests that physicians recommended its use for the relief of many ailments, including Constipation, Gout, Malaria and loss of Appetite, as well as an aid to Childbirth. Dr W O’Shaughnessy reintroduced cannabis into British medicine in 1842, for treating various ailments such as muscle spasms, menstrual cramps, rheumatism, and the convulsions of tetanus, rabies and epilepsy. It was also used to promote uterine contractions in childbirth, and as a sedative to induce sleep.

Cannabis can help in relieving symptoms of illnesses :

HIV-related and cancer-related wasting.

pain unrelieved by usual pain relief treatments.

neurological disorders including (but not confined to) multiple sclerosis, Tourette’s syndrome, and motor neuron disease.

nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, which does not respond to the usual treatments for this problem.

There is a large amount of anecdotal evidence, and some research evidence, about the usefulness of cannabis for these conditions, there is a lack of good controlled evidence. So further research is needed to examine the benefits that cannabis and cannabinoids appear to have for these illnesses.

Old Myths About Food & Health: Stop Believing Them

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 |

There are lots of confusing advice, old wives' tales and health myths out there. In some cases we believe and follow them. But not necessarily all age old tales about health or food is true. Presenting before you some of the most popular health myths and uncover the truth...

Myth: Asparagus is a diuretic.
Truth: Asparagus is not a diuretic. It just creates an odor during urination.

Myth: Bread and Potatoes make you fat.
Truth: No, this is absolutely false. Both are healthy carbohydrates that have about 100 calories and are low in fat. It's what you add to them like butter, sour cream, mayonnaise that increases fat.

Myth: Eating after 6 p.m. makes you gain weight.
Truth: Eating at night tends to lead to consuming higher calories. This is because at night you are home, near the T.V. When you go out for dinner in a restaurant or you eat in a party, you tend to eat higher fat and calories and larger portions. Calories are the same at any hour of the day. So there is no logic in saying that eating after 6 pm makes you gain weight.

Myth: A vasectomy is a protracted and painful procedure that could damage your sex life.
Truth: A vasectomy is painless and does not affect your sex life.

Myth: Acne is caused by not washing properly.
Truth: Cleaning your face too often can actually increase acne.

Myth: Depressed people need to 'pull themselves together' and then they'll be fine.
Truth: Depression is not a sign of personal weakness or character flaw. Depression is an illness involving an imbalance of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters and a doctor should be consulted.

Myth: You should always rest during your period.
Truth: Do whatever that makes you feels comfortable, including exercise.

Myth: A lump in your breast means you have breast cancer.
Truth: About 80 per cent of breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous).

Myth: Bananas are fattening.
Truth: They are actually low in fat. There is only half a gram of fat and 95 calories in a banana.

Myth: It's OK to skip breakfast.
Truth: Breakfast is a very important meal. When we're sleeping, we are also 'fasting' for an average of about eight hours, so it's essential to 'break' this fast.

Weird skin condition used for art

Friday, November 27, 2009 |

Have you heard about a skin condition referred as "dermatographia"? This is a condition in which one’s immune system exhibits hypersensitivity, via skin, that releases excessive amounts of histamine, which leads capillaries to dilate and welts to appear (lasting about half an hour) when the skin’s surface is lightly scratched. Artist Ariana Page Russell has this skin condition which frequently blushes and swells. This allows her to painlessly draw patterns and words on her skin, which she then photograph.

Here are a few samples:
